Subaru still packs a sporty punch

Byline: EDWARD STEPHENS

Sort of a "Die Hard" spoof, this one has its moments and James does squeeze out a few laughs, but the material ultimately lets him down."Centennial Collection: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"(Paramount, 1962, b/w, $16.99). This is a fine example of how a movie can rise above studio interference and budget restrictions with the right director, script and cast. John Ford would likely have filmed this in color on vivid outdoor locations except that Paramount was in a cost-cutting mood, so it was filmed on studio soundstages.Meanwhile, consumers should "hang kitchen utensils and pots and pans from the ceiling to save cabinet and counter space", the news source stated.Wayne and Mitchum have a warm, easy chemistry, and the supporting cast is a fine mix of up-and-comers and seasoned veterans -- including James Caan, hilarious as a young gambler whose firearm skills are so poor that Wayne gets him a sawed-off shotgun, and crusty Arthur Hunnicutt, who knows his way around a wisecrack."3 Days of the Condor" (Paramount/Blu-ray, 1975; R for violence, language, sex; $29.99). Robert Redford stars in this government- paranoia thriller as a CIA "reader" who becomes the quintessential innocent-man-on-the-run when his workplace is wiped out while he's literally out to lunch. (Sort of "The Bourne Identity" by way of Alfred Hitchcock.)The stylish dashboard, suede-like high-backed sports seats and multi-function steering wheel all add an element of refinement and there is little doubt it will continue to be a bestseller for Subaru, both in the new and used car market..Having suitable storage is important in all areas, whether they commercial or residential.Extras: widescreen, trailerAs well as open shelving, there are also other products used for housing objects that can be beneficial in small residences, it added. For example, utilising boxes under beds can be a great space saving tactic. Things like off-season clothes, wrapping paper and holiday decorations can be placed in such areas.Extras: widescreen, audio commentary (by Peter Bogdanovich with his archival recordings of Ford and Stewart), selected-scene commentary and introductions by Ford's son Dan (along with his archival recordings of Ford, Stewart and Marvin), featurettes, trailer, photo/art galleriesYOU don't have to be a car enthusiast to realise that Subaru's Impreza STI is not aimed at the motorist who is just looking for something to do the weekly shopping in or take the kids to school.E-MAIL: hicks@desnews.comThe rally-proven handling is brilliant, as is the pin-sharp steering, while the six-speed manual gearbox is precise."Infected" (Genius/RHI, 2008; R for violence, language; $14.95). Set in Boston, this Canadian TV movie is an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" wannabe about aliens using human hosts to breed as food. Unfortunately, the special effects are cheap and cheesy, and attempts at humor fall flat, thwarting Gil Bellows and Isabella Rossellini's best efforts. But power is no good without control and the STI, with its all-wheel-drive system, ensures all that power is put directly onto the road surface rather than wasting it with spinning wheels."Centennial Collection: El Dorado" (Paramount, 1966, $16.99). Howard Hawks essentially reworked his 1959 classic "Rio Bravo" for this rich, funny, highly entertaining Western about a drunken sheriff (Robert Mitchum) who is sobered up by a pal (John Wayne) so they can take on a passel of bad guys (led by Edward Asner).Surprisingly, I found the low-gear acceleration more muted than on the earlier generation of the car, with none of the initial kick in the pants I remembered from the past models.
